Ballet classes will focus on proper body alignment, positions of the arms, direction of the body, French terminology, proper extension of the legs and shape of the feet, while developing movement sequences, balance, and musicality. Various ballet techniques methods will be taught including but not limited to Cecchetti, Vaganova, Royal Academy of Dance, Balanchine, and French.

A strong background in Ballet will give the Jazz, Modern, and Lyrical dancer the skills necessary to grow in these styles.

A technique-based program focusing on building strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and a strong vocabulary of jazz movement. Jazz classes include warm-ups to train and tone the body, and progressions to sharpen dancers’ skills in extensions, turns, and leaps. Students will learn classical and contemporary styles of jazz, while enhancing their memorization skills.

A strong background in ballet will aid the jazz dancer as it promotes balance and grace. We encourage dancers to take a ballet class in conjunction with jazz to get the most value from jazz classes.

Lyrical is a dance style that combines the technical elements of ballet with the freedom and expressiveness of jazz. Lyrical focuses on the music and emotion of a song through movement and often tells a story. A strong ballet and jazz foundation enhances the quality of this style of dance.

Dancers will explore new ways of moving in combinations, floor work, partnering, and through improvisation. Classes will focus on musicality, performance quality, weight distribution, dynamics, and technical skills.

Musical Theater

Musical Theater class will focus on learning proper dance technique while exploring the various dance styles used in Broadway shows. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with Broadway style jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations. Emphasis will also be placed on learning performance skills such as connecting with the audience and telling a story through dance and facial expressions.

Acting class introduces students to basic vocal, music and acting exercises, basic elements of musical theater dance (story and character), props and sets, and exposes students to classical musical theater history and repertoire.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop encompasses many different urban dance styles, as well as freestyle movement, to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style. Our Hip Hop classes teach rhythm, coordination, musicality and choreography without suggestive music or movements. Students are challenged to think on their feet while enjoying an energetic and fast-paced class. Our Hip Hop dancers develop focus, strength, and agility while having fun. This is an excellent class for high-energy kids who want to take a fast and fun dance class.

Tap classes will focus on developing musicality, timing, and balance. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Classical to Broadway to Rhythm tap. In class exercises will emphasize building flexibility of the knees and ankles, coordination, rhythm, and speed of movement. All classes will concentrate on proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and having fun!

Learn the basics or work on advancing your skills in Acro class! Acro is not the typical tumbling or gymnastics class. Our experienced acro instructor will guide the class towards increased flexibility, balance, strength, and muscle control. This class will focus on fundamental acrobatic technique, teaching such skills as handstands, chin stands, elbow stands, cartwheels, back bends, walkovers, balance and contortion tricks, all each student’s individual level of experience. And it’s fun, too!

Foundations of Dance Program

Belmont Center for Performing Arts offers two levels of music-and-movement based pre-dance programs. Each level provides age appropriate activities exploring the way our bodies move to music.

Early Foundations (6 months-3 years w/accompanying parent)

This is a wonderful time for mommies (or daddies) and babies to bond, get moving and express themselves in new ways! Music and dance allow for a shared language between mommy and baby, especially before little ones can express themselves verbally. We’ll focus on musicality, creativity, physicality, and having a lot of fun!

Foundations (3-5 years)

Designed to introduce the young child to the world of dance and performance while establishing a strong base of the fundamental skills required for future dance classes –

  • Musicality
  • Body & Spatial Awareness
  • Balance & Flexibility
  • Creativity & Self Esteem
  • Classroom Etiquette

With movement, music, drama and instrumental exploration, we foster self-esteem and confidence and instill a sense of freedom of movement that will complement any style of dance studied in the coming years.

While this program is a serious introduction to the elements of music and dance, it is…above all…FUN!

Teen/Adult Programs

For students 16 years and older who have little to no dance experience, who have spent years away from dancing, or who are looking to try something new! These beginning level classes will move at a faster pace than levels designed for younger students, and will cover basic terminology and technique. Students will also learn the performance aspects of dance and learn to pick up choreography.
